Highlights keep your favorite stories pinned to your profile long after the 24 hours are up. So can you see who's been tapping through them? Sometimes, but not for long. Here's how highlight views actually work.
How Highlight Views Work
A highlight is made of old stories, and each story keeps its own viewer list. Instagram shows that list for a limited window after the story was first posted, generally about 48 hours. After that, the viewer list for that story disappears, even though the story itself stays in your highlight.
So if you added a story to a highlight right away, you'll see who viewed it during that first window. Views after that aren't shown to you.
What You Can See as the Owner
- Viewers of a story during its first window, whether they watched it as a story or in your highlight
- Total reach and impressions in insights, if you have a business or creator account
What You Can't See
- Who viewed an older highlight after the viewer window closed
- A running list of everyone who has ever watched a highlight
Can Others See When You View Their Highlights?
Yes, if the story inside is still within its viewer window and you're logged in. After that window, your view isn't shown. If you want to be sure, you can open public stories without logging in at all. Read our full breakdown of what people can see when you view their Instagram.
Watching Stories Without Showing Up
InstaSave never connects to your Instagram account, so opening a public story from a link doesn't put your name on any viewer list. Here's how to watch Instagram Stories anonymously.
Keep a Copy of Stories You Love
Highlights can be edited or removed at any time. If there's a story you want to keep, save Instagram Stories before they disappear as original files on your phone.
