Millions of people search for an Instagram story viewer every month. But what exactly is one, how does it work, and is it safe? Here's a plain-English explanation.
What an Instagram Story Viewer Is
An Instagram story viewer is a website or app that lets you watch someone's public Instagram stories without opening Instagram yourself. Most also let you download stories. The main reasons people use them are to watch without showing up in the viewer list, to see stories without having an Instagram account, and to save a copy before the story disappears after 24 hours.
How Story Viewers Work
Public Instagram content can be requested from Instagram's servers without your personal account. A story viewer does that request for you and shows you the result. Since your own account is never involved, the person who posted the story has no way of seeing that you watched.
This only works for public accounts. Private accounts are restricted to approved followers, and no legitimate viewer can get around that.
Types of Story Viewers
Websites
You type a username or paste a link into a site. They need no install, but many are covered in ads, pop-ups and fake buttons, and they go offline or stop working often.
Apps
Mobile apps do the same job in a native experience and can save straight to your camera roll. Quality varies a lot from app to app, so it's worth choosing carefully. Our guide to the best tools for downloading Instagram content safely explains what to look for.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Asking for your Instagram username and password
- Claiming to show private accounts
- Requiring you to complete surveys or install other apps before you can view anything
- Endless redirects and pop-ups
