If you've ever downloaded a video and found it wouldn't play, open in your editor or upload somewhere else, you know file format matters. The good news is that Instagram uses the most common formats there are, and if you save the original file, you never have to convert anything.
The Formats Instagram Uses
Videos: MP4
Reels, feed videos and video stories are MP4 files. MP4 is the most widely supported video format in the world. It plays on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and smart TVs, and it opens in nearly every video editor.
Photos: JPG
Photos from posts, carousels and stories are JPG files, the standard image format that works in every photo app, website and messaging service.
What Format Does InstaSave Save In?
InstaSave saves the original file Instagram stores, so videos come out as MP4 and photos as JPG. There's no conversion step, and because nothing gets re-encoded, you keep the original quality of every file.
Why the Original Format Matters
- Converting a video to another format re-compresses it, which costs sharpness and detail
- MP4 and JPG already work almost everywhere, so there's nothing to fix
- Original files keep their native resolution and aspect ratio
- You skip the extra apps and websites that converting usually requires
What You Can Do With MP4 and JPG Files
- Watch saved Reels in your Photos app, even offline without an internet connection
- Edit videos in CapCut, iMovie or any editor you like
- Share by AirDrop, text message or email
- Back them up to iCloud, Google Photos or a computer
