It's one of the most searched Instagram questions there is: if you screenshot someone's story, will they find out? The short answer is no. Instagram doesn't send a notification when you screenshot a regular story. But there are a few exceptions worth knowing, and a better way to keep a story than a screenshot.
The Short Answer
Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot or screen record a story, a feed post, a Reel or someone's profile. Instagram briefly tested story screenshot alerts years ago, but the feature never stuck.
When Instagram Does Notify Screenshots
There's one place where screenshots do get flagged: disappearing photos and videos sent in direct messages. If someone sends you a view-once or replayable photo or video in a DM and you screenshot or record it, the sender sees an indicator in the chat.
Regular DMs, stories, posts and Reels don't trigger anything.
What Does Show Up: The Story Viewer List
A screenshot is invisible, but viewing a story is not. When you watch a story from your Instagram account, your name appears in that person's viewer list for as long as the story is up. That's the part people usually forget.

Why Screenshots Aren't the Best Way to Save a Story
- They capture your screen, so the image is lower quality than the original
- Instagram's buttons, username and progress bar end up in the picture
- Video stories need screen recording, which catches notifications and needs trimming
A Better Way: Save the Original Story File
InstaSave saves the actual photo or video from a public story in full quality, with nothing on top. And because you never log in to Instagram in the app, opening and saving a story through InstaSave doesn't add your name to the viewer list.
Steps
- Copy the story's link from Instagram's share menu, or get it from a friend
- Paste it into InstaSave
- Save the original file to your library and camera roll

Respect What You Save
Saving a story for yourself is one thing. Reposting or sharing someone's content without permission is another, so ask before you share and always credit the creator.
